Police Medical Requirements

It is important to be aware of the medical requirements for police services before you apply. Each service is different, so it is important to investigate the specific police services to make sure you would not be disqualified due to your medical condition. We just wanted to offer you some general requirements.

Police services and recruitment will generally disqualify applicants if they have a medical condition, treatment, limitation, or disease that would:

- inhibit performance of police duties to a degree that even with accomodation, essential duties could not be completed safely;
- increase to an unacceptable level, the risk to the applicant’s health;
- increase the applicant’s risk of sudden incapacitation or impaired judgment;
- result in the transmission of an infectious disease to a co-worker or member of the public;
- renders the individual unfit to be a professional driver.

Vision Requirements
You will have to do visual tests to make sure you pass the minimum requirements. Below is an example of one police services minimum requirements.

Uncorrected Visual Acuity - at least 20 / 40 ( 6 / 12 ) with both eyes open.

Colour Vision – Pass Farnsworth D-15 without any colour corrective (e.g. X-Chrom, Chromagen) lenses.

Hearing Requirements
You will be required to pass hearing tests to ensure you have an acceptable level for speech recognition.
