What's on the Alberta Police Exam?

Every Alberta municipal police service requires the APCAT — it’s the first gate in the recruitment process. Our practice tests are built around all five APCAT sections with realistic questions and detailed explanations.

120 questions — approximately 3 hours — 70% minimum to pass Must be passed before submitting your application. Retake waits are 1 month, then 3 months, then 6 months for each subsequent attempt.

The APCAT tests five cognitive areas — it doesn’t measure subject knowledge, it measures your ability to think, reason, and perform under pressure.

  • Judgement — Situational decision-making using policing scenarios. Prioritize actions and assess appropriate responses.
  • Observation Skills — Recognizing details, spotting inconsistencies, and accurately interpreting visual information.
  • Learning & Memory Recall — You’re given a Pre-test Booklet with 30 minutes to study it. Then it’s taken away. Questions throughout the exam test what you retained.
  • Written Communication — Clarity, grammar, sentence structure, and your ability to convey information accurately in writing.
  • Problem Analysis — Breaking down complex scenarios, working through numerical problems, and arriving at logical conclusions.

The Pre-test Booklet is what catches most candidates off guard. Our practice exams include memory-based exercises so you walk in knowing exactly what to expect.

Some Alberta services also require the ACT (Alberta Communication Test) — a separate test covering vocabulary, spelling, and English grammar. Your PolicePrep program includes 3 full ACT practice exams so you’re covered either way.

What Our Candidates Say

"I studied with PolicePrep for 6 weeks before my APCAT test. The practice exams were almost identical to the real thing — especially the cognitive ability section. Passed on my first attempt and I'm now in the recruitment process with Calgary Police."

Sarah M.
Calgary, Alberta

"The memory recall practice was what made the difference for me. I wasn’t prepared for how the Pre-test Booklet worked until I practiced with PolicePrep. Being able to simulate that experience beforehand meant no surprises on test day. Passed comfortably on my first attempt."

Mike L.
Edmonton, Alberta

"My college instructor recommended PolicePrep, and I'm glad I listened. Being able to take the practice tests over and over until I felt confident made all the difference."

Jennifer K.
Red Deer, Alberta
